Women who have had breast augmentation surgery may choose to have their implants removed for a variety of reasons. Some may wish to replace their current implants, while others decide to remain implant free. These women may choose surgical removal of the breast implants, which is available at Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery in the San Diego area.
Who is it For?
There are a myriad of reasons why women may choose to have their implants removed, including:
- Decision to remove implants for medical or legal reasons
- Desire to change the size or shape of the breasts
- Switch from saline to silicone implants for a more natural feel
- Complications with current implants, such as capsular contracture
- Changes to the breasts, due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations or age
Some women desire to have breast implant removal alone. Others determine a combination of implant removal and a breast lift or new implants are the better solution. Dr. Kaweski works with each patient to determine her specific needs and recommend the procedure to achieve those results.
About the Procedure
Breast implant removal is performed at Aesthetic Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery by Dr. Kaweski as an outpatient procedure. The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and may take 1-2 hours to complete. If additional procedures are requested at the time of implant removal the surgical time could be longer.
Incisions are typically made in the same location as previous incisions, to minimize scarring. If scar tissue has formed around the implant, this may need to be removed as well. If a silicone implant is being removed due to a rupture, surrounding silicone may also be eliminated during the procedure.
After the Procedure
San Diego patients may experience mild discomfort after the procedure, which is effectively managed with oral pain medication. Bruising and swelling is common around the incision sites and will subside within a few days. Most patients return to work within one week and more strenuous activities within one month.
What about Results?
Results of breast implant removal can be seen right away and continue to improve during the following weeks as the body heals. If a patient is unhappy with the results of her breast removal, Dr. Kaweski can discuss options like new implants or a breast lift to improve the overall appearance of the breasts. Results of implant removal are permanent and no further procedures are needed if the patient is happy with her appearance.
